Magiculture

A small slice of Colophon came to London last week in the form of a panel discussion about independent publishing at Creative Review’s Portfolios event. Despite the tube strike a good crowd turned up to hear people from three magazines talk about their projects and share experiences. I chaired the discussion, for which honour I was given the above badge bearing the legend ‘Magiculture’. I like that kind of mistake.

Info graphics from Good

One of the great things about Good magazine is their info graphics. So what better than a Flickr site dedicated to them? Genius (via DO).

I’ve always enjoyed 032c, but following editor Joerg Koch’s excellent presentation of his magazine at Colophon2009 I have even more respect for what he and his team are doing. Hearing how the title has journeyed from self-conscious outsider to become increasingly more professional in presentation and content was one of the highlights of Luxembourg. Koch’s personable wit and humour served to underline the strength and seriousness of his magazine.

Yummy 3

A while back I asked you to retain this image of Brett Easton Ellis drinking from a can of Coke in your mind. This was why: the cover of the new issue of Yummy features another can. A tenuous link made worse by the length of time between the two posts but it seemed a good idea at the time. I thought I should clear up that reference.

Amsterdam magazine/book store Athenaeum has decorated their windows with the ‘We Make Magazines’ book. Thank you!

We Make Magazines – the exhibition

The exhibition based on the book: 111 independent magazines presented at the Casino Luxembourg as part of Colophon2009. Divided into five sections featuring quotes from the people behind the magazines along with copies of each magazine hung from wire for visitors to flick through.
