Don’t forget, it’s Printout tonight

Printout – All You Can Eat takes place this evening from 630pm at the Book Club. Featuring a buffet of food and drink publishers: Cereal, Doghouse, Hot Rum Cow, Mood, Put A Egg On It and Special Request. Tickets here.
Printout: All You Can Eat, Tuesday 28 May

It’s Printout time again, and with independent food (and drink) magazines on the up it seemed appropriate to take a look at some of our favourites.
So on 28 May we welcome Rosa Park from Cereal, Jon Saxon from Doghouse, Fraser Allen from Hot Rum Cow and Paul Sethi from Special Request to share what makes their take on food/drink special. And if that isn’t a rich enough menu, we also have video contributions from Put A Egg On It (USA) and Mood (Belgium).
It’s all being served up at The Book Club, Leonard Street, London EC2 on Tuesday 28 May. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7.30pm start.
Tickets are available for £5 here.
Printout – the Movie
Last month’s Printout focused on the business of publishing your own magazine, and turned out to be one of our most popular nights yet. So it’s a pleasure to be able to post this video of the entire discussion. Will Hudson and Bruce Sandell share invaluable insights based on their experiences with It’s Nice That and Rouleur.
Thanks to Tom Eager for film and edit, to the speakers for taking part, and to iSubscribe for their support.
Note: video lasts 55 minutes.

Next Printout confirmed – 26 March

We love talking about intelligently edited, lovingly designed, beautifully produced independent magazines at Printout. But how do you sustain a magazine and develop it into a business instead of a sideline? It’s a question that gets asked after every Printout, and one we hope to answer on March 26.
Our panelists Will Hudson, Cathy Olmedillas and Bruce Sandell are responsible for three well-made, long-standing independent magazines. Who better to talk business?
Tickets £5 available here.
Printout – new beginnings

The latest Printout took place earlier this week. The evenings have now developed their own structure and routine. Steve and I have learned not to worry about advance ticket sales, we almost always fill the Book Club basement, however late people leave it to book; there’s usually a good mix of familiar faces and newcomers attracted by a particular magazine; and there’s the inevitable last-minute tech problems to do with the projector (this week my laptop died and the remote control didn’t work with the replacement so I spent the evening pressing keys). The speakers deliver their talks, there’s a quick Q&A Session, followed by some beers and talk.
Local news

Before I sign off for the holidays, some quick updates.
Printout!
The next Printout! takes place on January 22, when we’ll be looking at new magazines for the new year. If you’re launching/have just launched/know of a new independent magazine please get in touch with Steve or me.
Making Magazines 2012
This day-long conference at St Brides was a personal highlight of 2012. As several people have pointed out, Simon and I promised a follow-up publication as a memento for all attendees. We haven’t forgotten, it’s been harder than expected to get it completed but the good news is it’s in production and should go to print early 2013. Something to look forward to!
The Modern Magazine
I’ve just completed a new book to be published in 2013 by Laurence King. More news nearer publication date.
Exhibitions
Two exhibition projects I helped with continue over into the new year. Graphic Design: Now in Production is in its last few weeks at the Hammer Museum, LA, while at Helsinki’s Design Museum The Home continues until January 13. And The Rise of Print is available for further venues in 2013.
magCulture shop
All orders to date have been mailed. Any placed over the holidays will be sent out early January. And talking of the shop, it’ll be expanding early next year with a new partner. Full details next year.
Merry Christmas
Thank you as ever for sending in your magazines, for reading the posts and using the shop. We’ll be helping you through the holidays with a daily dose of recent arrivals here at magCulture.
Have a good break.

A quick update on a few things…
First up, there are still a few tickets left for Printout! next tuesday (27 Novemeber). Lucy and Yassa from Juke have been added to the line-up sharing their favourite magazines of 2012. They’re also providing the music for the evning. Come along and vote – and pick up a free copy of Frieze Masters, the new art magazine from Frieze Publishing. Tickets are £5 here.
I’ll be joining Tyler Brulé to talk magazines on Monocle24’s ‘The Stack’ tomorrow, Saturday 26, 10-11am.
The recent quiet here is ending – expect more posts from next week.
Meanwhile don’t forget the magCulture shop remains open, with lots of our faves in stock (talking of which, if you ordered a copy of Chinese magazine Cover, we hope to have our copies soon and will be mailing them as soon as we do).
And finally, our newsletter will restart next week. Sign up using the field just there on the right >
Printout! November 27

The final Printout! of 2012 sees a special event seeking to answer the question, ‘what has been the best independent magazine of the year?’
Carefully avoiding statistical or jury-based methods, we’ve rounded up a group of experts – magazine editors, designers and commentators – and asked each of them to make the case for their favourite magazine. Hugely complex technical solutions are being arranged to enable international particiapants to participate – all other awards programmes will pale by comparison.
