Behind the scenes at the death of Nest

“I’m afraid I’m going to get bored and that it’s going to show in my work,” explained Joseph Holtzman as he closed his magazine Nest. Interesting piece from the New York Times back in 2004. (via Print Fetish)
Dr Martens ads in Fact magazine
If you saw the story on CR Blog about the new Dr Martens ads by Saatchi & Saatchi, the ones featuring dead rock stars wearing the boots in heaven, you might be interested in seeing the ads as they appeared in British music mag Fact magazine. Here they are, Kurt, Sid, Joey and Joe, their images used by the ad agency without permission of their estates:
Visionaire goes green

The 51st issue of multi-format art/fashion magazine Visionaire come in the form of a set of six identically-cut jigsaw puzzles. Each one has been created by a different designer, but all are identically cut so you can interchange the pieces to create ‘harmony’, the theme of the issue. Pictured above is the particularly cruel design by Vik Muniz.
The ‘harmony’ theme presumably comes from the rather unlikely sponsoring client, the new hybrid Lexus car, which explains the claim on the magazine site that the issue is ‘envoronmentally sensitive and uses partially recycled paper…’.
The issue will set you back $175; or you can play with it free on the website, although sadly you can’t mix the puzzles online.
Magazine Death Pool interview
Wagazi has an interview with Grim from Magazine Death Pool. We don’t find out much about Grim or the site, but there’s some interesting discussion about why magazines die.
Colophon curators make magazines!

Both my Colophon co-curators Andrew Losowsky and Mike Koedinger have launched new magazines recently. They share a desire to be international but go about that in different ways.
New issue of The Drawbridge

The fifth issue of The Drawbridge has just been published. I’ve heard this broadsheet-sized newspaper/magazine dismissed as a rip off of the original version of The Independent newspaper, but that’s an easy criticism that overlooks the content. There’s something quite refreshing seeing a new publication use this currently out-of-favour format.
This new issue is themed ‘Freedom’ and has written contributions from heavyweights JG Ballard and Clare Short alongside art by Peter Till (above), David Shrigley and Karen Caldicott. Photography is represented by Donovan Wylie, Ben Murphy and Polly Morgan. It makes for a curious mix of material that, although sometimes too serious, is getting richer issue by issue.
Ed Needham on leaving the men’s market
Today’s Guardian has former FHM, FHM US and Maxim editor explaining why he’s leaving men’s magazines behind him. ‘I’ve taken the ride up, and it was tremendous, thanks, but I think I’ll give the ride down the other side a miss’, he explains here.
