Magazines

Only in America

Mr Magazine has his annual round up of the ‘Hottest Launches’ of the year on his site now. A strange list it is too, for anyone outside the US. But one title stood out for me: the extraordinarily named, and quite un-ironic, Garden & Gun. Can you imagine a magazine being christened that anywhere else in the world?

Good to see the lovely Make spin-off Craft among the 17 Mr M selects.

I feel like Garden & Gun has gotten a lot of press since its release only for the fact that its completely ridiculous in stereotyping the South. People gawk and go “I can’t believe they named it that” and that’s the fuel they’re running on right now. No offense to Samir, but that’s the only reason its on the list. We’ll see where this magazine is in another year.

Love Make and Craft. The Halloween special was pretty ace (and a little goss). They remind me of those little geeky DIY mags that were popular in the 50s and 60s.

As the founding art director of CRAFT: and a designer for MAKE: ; I’d like to say thanks for the shout out. Although I’ve moved into other design territory, I’m so stoked to see the O’reilly team’s success!

Jeremy and all…
Garden & Gun is the prime example of the saying that you can not judge a book by its cover…the content of the magazine is as good as the content of The New Yorker, but with a Southern twist. The magazine just hired Sid Evans as its new editor. Evans was the editor of Field & Stream and Men’s Journal before that. Pick up a copy and judge for yourself. I too was critical of the name, but then the content won me over.

I think I was having a day when I wrote that. I’m having many of those lately.

I will have to take a better look at G&G. I still feel like naming it hurt it for me from a marketing standpoint, but I’ll take your word on the content of it, Mr. Husni.
