‘The 21st century begins now’
American Esquire arrives eight years late with news of the new century. Read about their plans for an animated front cover on the September issue in the New York Times. Using the same grey-scale E-ink technology as the Kindle, the cover message ‘The 21st century begins now’ will move in some way. Conceptually the right future-facing ‘magazine-y’ thing to do – get an advertiser to fund the debut of a new piece of technology as part of the your 75th anniversary party – but the execution sounds very dull. A missed opportunity, as Andrew points out.

I think the real reason they are doing it is so they can squeeze even MORE coverlines onto the page, now that they’ve successfully eliminated any negative space from their covers.
