The Great Cover Debates

The PPA’s Great Cover Debate shortlist is now up and open to voting. Not a bad selection in the end, though one or two surprising inclusions (that Empire cover?). I sense some of the covers included are representative of the magazine in general rather than being a great cover in their own right, which is disappointing. Click on the covers to hear the selection judges justify their choice.

Our own magCulture list is coming together well, but keep them coming in and I’ll post our shortlist at the end of August. Slightly different rules for our list – your choice can be from any country and any era.

I think by and large it’s a shocking shortlist. Hardly any of those are the best covers of the mags in question. What about the Gold issue of Vogue (Kate Moss as the Queen’s head?) Or the green jelly one?
As for the Face – there are plenty of better examples: China, Hard Times, Grace Jones, Paris… And no Town??
Hardly any of those shortlisted are ‘iconic’ or even particularly memorable.

Guess it’s just better than I expected, which is very different to it being a great list. At least Oz, Nova and Time Out are represented by good examples.

Agree about The Face, though – like I said in my post, there a load of covers – The Face, Private Eye, Vogue as you say Mark – that are the wrong covers but the right magazines. That first Face cover disappeared without trace – not til Brody got involved did the covers start being special.

Yes you’re right, at least they’ve included those titles, just a bit of a disappointing final list of examples for each
