New Interview

The cover is promising… the re-launched Fabien Baron/Glenn O’Brien Interview is almost here. Note the new logo. Stand by for the magazine itself.

I just hope they’ve decided to veer away from the whole “let’s just print it on toilet paper” look…

The paper was (and hopefully will remain) a key part of the Interview look-and-feel. As well as most U.S. mags needing to be lightweight for economic subscription freight etc, the roughness was a key part of Warhol’s evolution of the mag in various formats over the years – from the original folded tabloid newspaper style through format variations of the years.
Warhol saw it all as ‘throwaway’ – (reflection on its original intentions to provide comment on celebrity etc) but it’s certainly not ‘toilet paper’. That Interview paper is so damn hard to get hold of (I’ve tried), and as far as I recall, only one mill in the US produces it.
I really hope Baron hasn’t gone glossy.

According to the Folio story, ‘The new-look Interview—hitting newsstands August 26—is bigger (13” X 10” from the current 12” X 10”) perfect bound and uses a heavier stock’.

That paper was awful – impossible to repro on. It justs sucks up all the ink. Am pleased to hear he has moved it on – it needed to. Should think it might be easier to get hold of it now then..

They also say the cover is printed on metallic (A first for a US mag???). I think the beautiful uncoated days are well and truly over…

It’s the first interview I’ve bought in 5 years. It’s very well done. The design is clean, not so much fresh only because it’s directly a response to what’s happening in magazines everywhere. It would be a cross between French Vogue of course, very much as well as the striking nature of V but without the cheesy/gloss. There are also nods to Fantastic Man. Most of the articles are quite pretentious in their read. It’s a lot of, “Oh you vacationed there too…” “Oh I love that person too.” You definitely get the feeling that you’re reading a magazine created by a club that you’ll never be a part of. But with all that aside, the photography is perfection, the paper is still keeping with Interview but is better and the overall creative direction is clear and concise, making you long for the next issue.
