Your favourite covers #5

favourite covers selection 5

A slightly strange combination for collection five – some covers that were hard to find partners for.

On the left is one of many possible examples from Herb Lubalin’s U&lc, the magazine from the International typeface Corporation, as recommended by Things To Look At. ‘When you’re black and white, and you have no pictures, what do you do? You just do something amazingly typographic.’

The Vogue cover comes from Will, who says, ‘I love this cover because it’s just so… strange. It’s from 1946 and I think shot by Irving Penn.’

Finally, Angela Lamb sent this 1997 i-D cover because ‘It’s such a stunningly simple and gorgeous image (Laura Foster by David Simms). The shadow covering the eye is so subtle compared to the other ‘winking’ covers and the one word ‘intrigue’ is all it needs to say. I bought it within seconds of seeing it.’

Three more sets to follow this week.

I miss smart covers like these. I’ve only recently discovered your blog and I am grateful for it.

It gives me hope in the craft and idea behind image making.

Sincerely,
C
