More crystals at Bazaar

They did it back in September 2007 and this month they do it again. British Harper’s Bazaar has struck a deal with Swarovski crystal to add crystals to their front cover, this time in conjunction with artists Peter Blake and Marc Quinn who have each designed a front cover.

Which is nice, it makes more of the physical nature of print, but perhaps the clever part is the way the cover lines are printed on the plastic bag the issue comes in. Against the white background of the cover the lines are perfectly legible, yet pull the magazine out of the bag and you’re left with a clean, stylish front cover devoid of cover lines, below. A simple, effective idea.

Sadly, the distribution of the special diamante-studded issue appears to be confined to the London area, with other regions receiving a standard 2-D cover shot without the sparklers. I haven’t seen one anywhere, and my own subscription copy was bare.
As they also did this with the 2007 issue, it seems UK Bazaar thinks visual experimentation is only appreciated by those in possession of certain postcodes.

This cover looks great, and I love the way the cover lines are printed on the bag. You would think subscribers would have got these copies. Reminds me of a really old copy of 19 magazine http://www.wemakemags.com/2008/09/teen-mags/
that had a similar treatment, in that the cover lines were screen printed on an acetate overlay.
Check out UK Esquire covers too – they do a newstand version, then a version with no cover lines for subscribers only.
