Seven of the best

Seven of my favourite independent magazines have new issues out now. Between them, they cover just about all of life: art, sex, architecture, cars, melancholy, football and photography. I’m not going to write at length about them here, but all seven titles are as strong as ever.

S-magazine
Danish sex mag continues to give photographers the space to experiment with creatively explicit photography, adding a more considered approach to design and intelligent use of mixed paper stocks,

Pyramid Power
Canadian art title continues its quirky way round the creative side of Vancouver.

Pin-Up
US architecture, featuring sumptious metallic gold ink throughout while maintaining a starkly modernist graphic look.

Kasino A4
Finnish melancholy deals with sex with a typically mad combination of explicit photography and deeply personal reminiscences of lost virginity.

Carl*s Cars
Norwegian car magazine returns with its 24th collection of charming anti-petrolhead reflections on car culture.

8
British photographic title publishes its second issue as a bi-annual and is looking increasingly assured. The design has settled down, and the photo stories are a strong and rare range of reportage.

Null Acht
Austrian football newspaper changes format to become a magazine, a slight disappointment, but the design keeps it looking very different to the average football title.

These are all great. I think, though, I need to mail you some American mags that may not be coming to England…

I saw S magazine among a bunch of photography magazines at a newsstand today and flipped through it. I couldn’t really get a feeling as to what it was *about* (you call it a sex mag, but it wasn’t very sexy — neither exciting nor giving much of an aura of sensuality). I’m not sure if that’s my fault as a reader (or rather, skimmer) or theirs.

I did end up buying one of the magazines on the stand, but it wasn’t S.

Kasino looks great – for all the “demise” of publishing, some great stuff still out there, pity they don’t reach Dubai…
