Black front covers

Publishing folklore says a black backgorund is a strict no-no for a front cover. Yet here are three current magazines from different countries breaking the rule.

They look strong, don’t they? Black is the perfect backdrop for the conceptual cover and lets the logo and cover lines stand out easily (Neon, Good, Ling)

Very nice indeed.
Monocle is pretty black too. Although I guess it always has a large image on it.

FHM was always pretty black too – back when it ruled the world.

we are working on domus with a black background cover concept for a while as well. the interesting challenge is to develop the cover and the plastic wrapping to form an additional image. http://www.onlab.ch/projects/editorial/magazines/domus/913.htm

They look kind of goofy to me.
