Architectural Review redesign
Creative director Violetta Boxhill recently left Icon to join Architectural Review. Here’s her first development, a vastly improved logo created with art director Cecilia Lindgren. I’m looking forward to seeing the redesigned magazine later this month.
Things To Look At has a look back at the history of AR.

Just seen the ar. Would be a triumph of style over substance had it been stylish. However … the numbering is very confusing, the yellow excerpts horrendous, the vertical lines look like a mistake, lumpen titling is far too prominent, MARGINALIA down one column in steps is truly atrocious. Don’t most educated people know where countries are, do we need a map of the world? Incidentally, if the AR were a country it would be Dubai now. And that garish Stockholm apartment, what does that have to recommend it? Imagine convalescing there, or waking up with a hangover. Timeless elegance is what we would have expected, there is no elegance in this redesign.

I saw the magazine today in a bookshop and was HUGELY disappointed! I used to be subscriber for a long time and only cancelled my subscription, but not due to the design, simply because I did not find the time to read it. Always appreciated it though. Now, there is simply no way I can subscribe again, because this redesign is a farce. The designer(s) or design and marketing team seem to have dunked hands into the toolbox of flavors and styles and not thought of what AR stood and stands for with its history and heritage. Very very disappointing indeed.
