Monocle watch

Monocle has quietly entered its third year, the spine now featuring an orange issue number key. It’s this sort of attention to detail that makes it so admired by designers.

What the magazine industry really needs now is people slagging each other off

Monocle works because:

1) It’s unique, whether you find the editorial interesting or not. And many people do find it interesting.

2) It has ben brilliantly sold, as a concept and a magazine, by Tyler Brulé. Rate him or not, you cannot deny his success record.

3) People in magazines, particularly designers, love it, and that goodwill always helps [see above comments) in terms of contributors, PRs and advertisers wanting in.

4) Brulé’s former projects were lavish as well as editorially unique and beautifiul-looking. Monocle isn’t made with quite the budgets that Wallpaper once enjoyed (there is no chef, for example…) and so the bottom line isn’t so bottomed out.

And maybe there’s more to it than that. And maybe it isn’t kept going very well, money wise, itself, that is. Still, it functions as the shop window for winkreative, it has a brand strong enough to have two or three shops (i am unsure, at least london and L.A has one), bags being sold in Collette and Dover Street Mkt. e. al. They make conferences, and talks. Bascially, they’re everywhere.
And let’s face it, the ads are where the money lies. And they haven’t got the cheap ones – but goes after the top-dogs. Let it be airplane companies or car manufacturers, fashion labels or tourist attractions.

I feel sorry for the poor sod that employs Richard. What a ray of sunshine.

I haven’t missed a copy of Monocle since its launch, its the first magazine I have felt is about my life…I enjoy the offbeat and unusual articles. Its not full of fashion pap like so many.

I absolutely love Monocle magazine, only been getting it for about a year now, and OK yes some of it can be a little too “perfect” (for the rich and beautiful people, only – ha!) but there are some really interesting features that I just don’t think I would otherwise have had the opportunity to come across (so OK maybe that speaks volumes about what I read, but that’s the point, no?) – so, sorry, mine may not be the popular opinion here, but I simply LOVE this magazine…

Monocle is a great magazine, nothing one-liner about it at all. It’s the content that makes it so, and a deep, fundamental optimism, based on a belief that quality matters. It’s not all about luxury. Monocle Weekly (at monocle.com) is pretty good too. We’re also proud “charter” subscribers!
