New magazines

The Ride

Cycling is one of those activities that divides people. For some, it is at best a convenient and environmentally-friendly method of transport while for others it is an absolute obsession. For those who fall on the obsessive side of that equation there are plenty of magazines dealing with the subject. Few, though, are as beautiful as The Ride.

The Ride is an independently-produced British magazine that deals with all aspects of cycling. Like many of the best independent titles it approaches its subject matter in a far more open manner than a mainstream title might do. Cycling is covered in its broadest sense. If it’s to do with bikes and cycling it’ll be in The Ride.

The linking factor is people. Editor Philip Diprose and art director (and brother) Andrew Diprose have identified an area of shared passion that isn’t catered for in existing cycling titles. Like Carl*s Cars, there is a disparate group of people out there obsessed by the subject matter and the culture that surrounds it.  Cycling is the starting point, a theme to hold together the content, but the magazine spins off from there to include geography, history, sport and travel, as well as the more obvious trends, equipment and clothing.

It’s all presented cleanly, a simple black and white design printed on heavy uncoated stock – think journal rather than magaizne – letting the photography and illustration provide colour and pace. Lovely stuff.

Although readers of this lovely niche journal are obsessive about cycling, projects like this couldn’t have happened without the increased popularity of cycling attracting a broader range of people bringing it into the mainstream.
