Magiculture

A small slice of Colophon came to London last week in the form of a panel discussion about independent publishing at Creative Review’s Portfolios event. Despite the tube strike a good crowd turned up to hear people from three magazines talk about their projects and share experiences. I chaired the discussion, for which honour I was given the above badge bearing the legend ‘Magiculture’. I like that kind of mistake.
The event went well, I think. Certainly follow-up emails were positive. What I particularly enjoyed about it was hearing three very different publications described in detail by the people behind them. Becky Smith’s Lula, Danny Miller’s Little White Lies and Karen Lubbock’s Karen are all special magazines that become even more unique when you here their creators talk about them. These people are passionate about what they’re doing and that passion not only shines through in the pages of their magazines but in the way they talk about their projects. This passion hinted at what being at Colophon feels like. Magiculture indeed.
It wasn’t all positive – there was some pessimism about the future of small magazines – but judging from the questions at the end several in the audience have plans to launch their own magazines. To which I say – do it!
Thank you to everyone at Creative Review who helped make the event happen, to the speakers for giving their time, and to the audience for beating the tube strike.
Did I mention the book?

Its a shame this wasn’t better publicised by CR I would have liked to have heard that.
