Smash Hits returns for one issue

It seems Bauer Media have discovered the back catalogue of magazine titles they inherited when they bought EMAP.

Not content with researching the possibility of relaunching The Face, they’ve just completed a one-off special issue of eighties pop title Smash Hits to mark the death of Michael Jackson. Out tomorrow, it’s edited by one of the original editors Barry McIlherney.

UPDATE: Mr Magazine reviews US magazine reaction to Jackson’s death.

I think that’s a great idea. Do you think when David Bowie dies they’ll bring back New Sounds, New Styles for one issue?

man it seems nothing is “sacred” – was never a reader of Smash Hits but having followed design and designer culture I am aware of its cultural significance.

With so many legendary titles falling into their coffins way before their time, shouldn’t these publishing houses be investing their time and money in helping more editorial powerhouses stay afloat instead of reviving long lost formulas which were peacefully laid to rest years ago?!

When will they learn.

I vote no on a return of The Face also Jeremy, it was the definitive directory for an era, a revival will only serve to dismember and defecate on its’ prestigious history.

I agree new formulas for changing times, no to resurrecting olg mags surely the magazine is dead anyway with the dominance of the internet.
