Mapping London’s magazine stores

Thank you to everyone who contributed their favourite London magazine stores to my recent appeal. Several stores came out well: Magma (of course), Art Words and Rococco all received multiple mentions, as did the late, great Borders on Oxford Street (their Islington store appears to still exist). At one extreme, the suggestion of the Victoria station branch of WHSmith led to the addition of branches at all major rail stations, while at the other extreme was the likes of Leather Lanes’ second hand magazine stall.

But there are more than 30 decent magazine stores in London, so I’ve made a Google Map of the list and will try to keep it updated. Send me your further suggestions, or better still, if you have a Google account, log on and add them yourselves. Over to you..

As an aside to this, I used my contribution to an LDF poster exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum to promote the map. That’s my poster, below right. I was going to add something here about combining screen printing and Google maps, old-tech/new-tech, but despite triple-checking the URL on the poster I overlooked the case-sensitivity of the bit.ly url shortener. HEBCV are the correct characters, but they need to be written as HeBCv to reach my map. Not so clever. See corrected version below.

  1. Ace! Thanks for this
It’s not as good as Islington / the old Oxford St store, but there’s still a decent selection of mags at the Borders on Charing Cross Road too
