The return of Brody

Neville Brody has just completed the design and art direction of his first complete magazine project since… well, a long time ago. Apart from a few recent forays into front covers he’s stayed away from the form that made his name.

He’s back with a one-off special edition of Arena Homme + that celebrates the late Ray Petri’s buffalo work, as featured in many issues of The Face while Brody was art directing it in the early eighties (see front cover below).

It’s hard to judge the issue from a couple of spreads and a cover, but it’s great he’s back in editorial. And don’t forget he’s giving a rare live interview appearance for D&AD on Novemeber 25th, with the intriguingly titled ‘Neville Brody – Wanker or Genius?

The type is really quite hard to read (or is that just me?) – it seems a little more heavy handed than the first time around. Editorially it is really interesting – once you can decipher the headlines. Admire Brody for having the balls to do it – knowing that he might take some criticism for it. Genius or wanker? Bit of both. But who isnt?

Beautiful. Fantastic, dignified tribute to Ray Petri from the people who knew him.
