Draft magazine

Issue four of Draft magazine has been out a while now, but is worth seeing for it’s cover featuring a lenticular by Julian Opie. I’ve always liked Opie’s work, both his personal and commercial (Blur covers) artworks have a simplicity and strength that others working with the same kind of line-art lack. The Draft cover is typical of how he can adapt his seemingly simple style to work using different technologies.
Lenticulars are often just a gimmick and have been used poorly on many magazines; cover models have winked at the reader, and coverlines disappeared etc. But this cover strips the lenticular down to it’s simplest form, with a couple of black and white line images flicking back and forth to create the slightest movement of the body – something that can’t be reproduced well here.
The two images shown above are the front and back of the issue, and the magazine website has a rollover that changes between these two images. You need to see a copy of the magazine to see Opie’s cover at it’s best.
More about Draft here. (thanks Andrew)

I’ve been playing with this mag in Borders for the last couple of weeks – at last a good lenticular cover! Can you think of any others?

Re: good lenticular covers, Total Film did a great Clark Kent/Superman one a few months back. Add!ict did an odd, almost 3D one of an archaeological site that’s strange and almost works, too.
