Christmas #8: Gym Class Magazine

Gym Class Magazine is a project I’ve been meaning to write about here for some time now but never quite got round to. The recent publication of issue 4 gives me the chance to correct this.

As you’ll see in the above picture, this latest issue is significantly larger than previous ones. The new large format is a result of editor/publisher Stephen Gregor using the Newspaper Club to produce the issue. So it’s a tabloid-sized newsprint publication this time, but retains its black and white appearance.

These pictures give a pretty clear idea of the design – a neat combination of bold sans serif and black letter gothic.

Gregor explains the name of his publication: ‘Remember your high school gym class? The bit where two kids were made captain and took turns choosing who they wanted on their team? Well, Gym Class Magazine is a zine for the guy chosen last’. It takes a close up look at a selection of creative projects and ideas, things Gregor likes.

Luckily for me, and by extension you, he likes what we like. Not only is the issue produced by the Newspaper Club, but it features a joint discussion of their magazine collections by magCulture friends Andrew and Michael, above and below. It also includes Nicholas Felton’s personal annual reports and Andy Gilmore’s illustration work. There’s not much more to it than that – a neat selection of one person’s interests and tastes – but that’s its charm.

Buy it here.
