The book is dead ?

I caught up with Malcolm Garrett yesterday, who shared this spread he wrote and designed for Graphics World. In it, he argues that the computer should be seen as an opportunity, not a threat, by publishers and designers. If you’ve not heard of Graphics World, it’s not because it’s a new launch or an obscure title. The reason you might not know it is it’s no longer published – I think it later became Grafik.

Malcolm’s piece was first published in 1991. That’s 19 years ago. To put that in technological perspective, he designed it using QuarkXpress 3.0 and Illustrator 3.0 on a MacIIcx, and had to provide the magazine with a print for them to scan and reproduce it on its pages. I know this because this information is included on the page – it was that rare then.

It seems amazing that 19 years later the same debate continues. You can read Malcolm’s latest contribution in the upcoming 30th anniversary issue of Creative Review, out this week. You can also read it online.

After the jump – a hi-res version of the Graphics World piece (drag to desktop to read).

Could you provide a high resolution version of that spread? I’m curious to see what he wrote back then. Thanks!

Thanks for putting this up, very useful for my final major project. Especially love:

“We are obliged to move forward and address the technology of the day not by asking it to do what has been done before but by testing its abilities to reach into the unknown.”

As relevant today as it was back then with the iPad and the first foray into touchscreen magazines by Wired.
