Magazines

The 50 best magazines EVER…

There’s nothing like a list to get people wound up, and this one from Good magazine will irritate anyone who believes there is more to a great magazine than being of US origin. Good of course is American itself, but 44 of the 50 selections are American. Many of these deserve inclusion, but others are more questionable. Lucky? The Whole Earth Catalog? And of the six that aren’t American, one is Loaded! Time to write our own list. Suggestions please. (Thanks Marissa)

Wow. Totally US centric. Print Fetish mentioned the word ‘pedestrian’ which was not totally out of place either.

If only Mr Carter hadn’t declared it to be a definative list of the ‘Best Magazines Ever’ and Good Magazine had cast their net wider than their supposedly ‘eclectic’ group of ‘aficionados’ we might have something a little more interesting. I mean who outside the US reads ‘The New Yorker’ or ‘National Lampoon’ or ‘People’ on a regular basis?

BTW A quick trip to Wikipedia tells us the first magazine was an English title called ‘The Gentleman’s Magazine’ published in 1731, something Carter neglected to mention in favor of The General Magazine conceived by Ben Franklin. Says it all really.

Bad Good Magazine.

Another view on Print is Dead; ‘Carter gets, I think, just about everything wrong in his essay…’
