Magazines

Sweet coincidence

speakCover.jpg

Having criticized Good magazines’ top 50 magazines list yesterday, today I’ve been asked to contribute a list of my favourites for a piece in Idea magazine. And now I realise how hard it is to compile a list. Next up a list of the worst magazines?

Here’s my first attempt at favourites:

Speak
The New Yorker
Re-
The Face (Brody era)
032c
• Twen
• Colors (issue 13, no words)
Carl*s Cars
Self Service
• Econy
Spy
• List
• The Sunday Times Magazine (1970s era)

A fine list. I’d add Granta, McSweeneys, The Believer, Carlos, Acme, late 90s Wired, The Economist, Edge, La Mas Bella, probably some other Colors, Eseté, early Dazed, Avant Garde, early Marmalade and probably lots more that don’t occur to me right now…

I think a list of worst magazines or ‘magazines that could try harder’ would be a bit easier, but maybe kind of mean, I dunno. There quite a few on your list that I really want to check out.

I’m happy to see Self Service on there. They are always creating cool new article formats like ’100 Things’ or the fashion portraits project or their current A to Z section at the front. I’d forgotten about Re- too. Re- is/was an excellent magazine.

Self Service is often overlooked, perhaps because it gets pigeon-holed as ‘fashion’. Yet as you say it’s had many great editorial ideas alongside its singular back-to-the-seventies design aesthetic. And you’re right of course about the ‘worst’ list – more trouble than it’s worth!

Don’t forget Cabinet magazine – one of the best mags available these days.
