Magazine has news

Angelo Cirimele’s magazine about magazines, Magazine, carries the above piece of information it it’s current issue. Is Brody designing the French edition of Grazia? What’s the jasmin reference about?
No answers here but it gives me the excuse to feature some pages from Magazine. A small-format publication made in Paris, it features news, interviews and reviews about magazines, along with retrospectives on classic titles. Each issue is designed differently; this issue is art directed by Julie Joliat and Zachary Ohlman, and is very clean and sparse with tiny headlines floating in the centre of the page, in the same position regardless of what else is present. See the example headline, ‘Mini International’, below, where one of the images blocks part of the headline (also, note the apparently random, un-designed approach to the images, again):

And then this example where the headline coincides with some text. Once you get the system, it’s strangely satisfying:

One of the challenges facing a magazine about magazines is how to present yet another set of pages from a magazine. Here, the art directors deal with this by creating still lives using pages from featured publications:

Oh, and here’s the front cover:

Sadly Magazine isn’t available outside France, but it’s a great resource and worth catching if you’re in Paris. (thanks to Scott)
