Marmalade is a recently launched magazine for the creative industries that presents new talent in areas ranging from fashion design to advertising. It has sought to avoid the deadening effect of layout programs, instead creating every page as a tableau that is photographed for inclusion in the magazine. Each issue uses a different device to underpin the tableau. Everything in the first issue was held together using fridge magnets. In issue two every item was sewn or embroidered together to create the pages; issue three used pins, and issue four rubber bands held together layers of paper. The covers use these same techniques to create colourful, commercial designs that tread a clever balance between doing their own thing and applying common cover rules. The logo is large and clear, but on issue three is replaced by the word 'Mistakes', a reference to that issues' theme. Issue two mentions sex in its headline - a standard device on mainstream covers, and issue four creates a face using the issue number and a pair of shiny red lips.
