We Make Magazines

‘We Make Magazines’ was published alongside the Colophon2009 independent magazine symposium, and features images from, and interviews with, the people behind over 100 independent magazines from around the world.

The challenge was to let the examples of work from the many magazines come to the fore rather than the design of the book itself. A simple structure was devised in collaboration with graduates Alex Hunting and Lars Laemmerzahl, and then every page of images constructed slightly differently to provide variation and pace. A further textural change was added by using loose hand-drawn illustrations by Jean Julien to add character to the section dividers, and there were ten ‘lead’ magazines that received more pages and again added a change of pace.

The cover features front covers of the same ten magazines wrapped around the spine.
