Over recent years there has been a reaction against the rigidity of design created using computers. Magazines have led the way in experimenting with methods of softening the clinical, harsh effect of computer layouts by adding hand-drawn elements to page designs (see pp151-155 of magCulture, the book). Now this hand drawn aesthetic is becoming integrated into the page designs. New York-based microzine Tokion uses embellished versions of typefaces. Recently it has been selecting seventies-style decorative faces for headlines and drawing over, adding to and colouring the characters to bring a bespoke feel to each design.
