Direction of Travel is devoted to airline maps, and is published by digital infographics designer Christian Nolle.

The broadsheet mag tell the illustrated story of the route maps that are often the only lasting physical manifestation of airline networks at a specific moment in time.

This fourth issue covers maps created Air India and Japan Airlines, reminding us that the tradition of applying artistry into mapping airline routes extended beyond the western hemisphere.

As well as the maps, there’s a story about a man flying from Tokyo to London on a Japan Airlines 747 in the 1970s and the first instalment of a new series called Airport Portraits. The first one looks at the history of Anchorage, Alaska, which during the cold-war acted as a regular refuelling stop for fights from Europe to and from Asia as overflying the Soviet Union was not possible ..
