Amalgam #5
165 x 230 mm, 376 pages
Chicago, USA
Ad hoc, since 2018
Editor and art director: Pouya Ahmadi
This issue: Alienation
Exploring the intersection of typography, language, and power, each issue of Amalgam brings together an impressive selection of new and archive writing along a design-orientated theme. It’s edited, designed and published by Pouya Ahmadi, an Iranian-American designer teaching at Rhode Island School of Design.
Issue five is built around Alienation, and stories range from an essay about walking the Israel–Palestine border to a reassessment of the links between Futurism and fascism. A poem-like story balances a second generation immigrant’s reflection on their parents attitude to their new home country with an analysis of the use of punctuation to define their newly assigned nationality. With many more pages than previous issues, this one is packed with similarly fascinating pieces linking art and design with the big issues facing our world.
From the Journal:
‘Amalgam is one of those small independents that deliver on every level, living up to its name by combining challenging content with challenging design.’
