D&AD 2009 open for entries, judges announced

D&AD has been taking a lot of stick recently for it’s lack of support from (and for) graphic design. While the general design graphic categories have been suffering, editorial design has been attracting growing numbers of entries. Quantity isn’t everything, but thankfully the quality has matched the quantity, with 25 projects featured in this year’s annual and yellow pencils for Fantastic Man and Carl*s Cars. I’m on the executive committee at the D&AD, so you’d expect me to say this is a good thing. But let me explain a little more about why I believe it’s a good thing.

recent exhibition of previous D&AD Annuals demonstrated, the charity grew out of the developing mid-sixties world of graphic design. It was primarily a design organisation, and a central part of the work was editorial design: Nova, Queen, Time Out all featured. So it is entirely appropriate that editorial design should be featured and celebrated today.

For the second year, the cost of entering has been held at the reduced rate of £80 for single items. And there is a particularly strong jury for the category:

Mirko Borsche (Mini International, Die Zeit)
Stephen Coates (The Drawbridge)
Andy Cowles, Foreman (IPC Media)
Scott Dadich (Wired)
Richard Spencer Powell (Monocle)
Suzanne Sykes (US Marie Claire)
Matt Willey (Studio8)
