Interview is a huge magCulture favourite right now, for its design as much as its content. Launched in 1969 by Andy Warhol, the magazine, nicknamed ‘The Crystal Ball of Pop’, features interviews with celebrities, artists, musicians, and creative thinkers. Its trademark is the celebrity-interviews-celebrity Q&A, matched with brilliant photography, and in embracing this format the current creative team have taken it right back to it roots in an Instagram-friendly manner.
Red lights, stop signs...Olivia’s making headlines! On the cover of the September 2023 issue (and Interview's 550th), it’s Olivia Rodrigo in conversation with fellow pop star Phoebe Bridgers. Inside, hear from Jacolby Satterwhite, Tems, Camila Morrone and Dixie D’Amelio, while Mel Ottenburg speaks to Mary Gabriel about her new 800-page biography on Madonna, herself an Interview cover star back in June 1990.
And, as the team point out, all features in this issue were completed prior to the beginning SAG-AFTRA strikes.
On the Journal
Art director Kurt Woerpel runs through the previous issue’s typography:
‘This brief insight into the typography of Interview is a reminder how complicated it can be to create something that appears simple. And this is the secret to the magazine’s success: a simple concept fullfilled by a strong team passionate about refining their contributions into a large-format celebrity zine. Let’s call it Magazine of the Year.’
