Nomas #20

240 x 330 mm, 204 pages
Nicosia, Cyprus
Editors-in-chief: Yannis Bournias and Lina Stefanou
Creative director: Dimitris Papazoglou

Every issue of Nomas explores a different destination or theme through photography, writing, local craftspeople and more.

Their introspective 20th issue is dedicated to Cyprus, an island of halves (a UN buffer zone literally divides the Turkish-occupied north from the Greek south) and one that the editors initially struggled to make sense of: ‘It took four days for Cyprus to appear; but when it did, it emerged all clear like a nude Aphrodite before us,’ writes Lina Stefanou, whose introductory travel diary offers a distinct snapshot of life on the island.

Inside, hear from the likes of artist Maria Perendou, poet Gürgenç Korkmazel, art collector Dakis Joannou, fashion designer Hussein Chalayan, publisher and arts patron Nikos Pattichis, and photographer Socratis Socratous, who was the first person to photograph the occupied zone in 2003. In between, images of Cyprus' landscapes, architecture, people and Lefkaritiko lace fill the generously-sized pages.
