This week the publishing world was hit by the news that the art director’s art director George Lois had died. His sixties cover designs for Esquire remain a common reference point today for editors and designers alike. Here, we republish a 2010 interview with Lois, who said at the time, ‘Magazine geeks are my people.’

Our favourite magazine about magazines is back! New launch Jim is the latest incarnation of Gym Class Magazine, written, edited and designed as ever by Steven Gregor. And this time he’s added his own illustrations— the focus of our review.

This new issue of Illinois, US-based design journal Amalgam is a triumph of self-imposed parameters. It’s a brilliant piece of black and white editorial design, the denial of colour forcing its maker Pouya Ahmadi to find other ways to bring to life the issue’s rich design- and language- focused content.

This Lineto issue of Revue Faire is the perfect issue to start your relationship with the magazine. As its name alludes, it’s a magazine about doing as much as about thinking. The intelligent essay is enhanced by the clever art direction and design, the visuals more than just decoration.

After plenty of experience producing magazines for others – including British Esquire, Christies, Wallpaper* and Cloakroom –  art director David McKendrick has just launched the first issue of his own title, Paperboy. ‘Since I got Paperboy out my head, then out the door, then out into other peoples hands, I have felt a gentle buzz of optimism in the air.’
