Modern Magazine 2014 update
With just over four weeks left until this year’s Modern Magazine conference we’re getting into final planning here at magCulture. Over the next couple of weeks there’ll be plenty of updates and additions to share, but today I’m excited to confirm our next speaker on the line-up.
David Moretti is the multi-award winning creative director of the Italian edition of Wired magazine. His designs for the print and iPad editions of the magazine are stunning, more than matching the US and UK editions. Despite my doubts about the future potential of the iPad, David’s digital work is one of the outstanding examples of how to develop beautiful print design and typography for the screen. He’ll be sharing work in both media, offering insight into how the print designer can adapt.
He joins a global line-up of editors and designers brought together to examine the future of magazines:
Adam Moss, editor, New York magazine.
Kai Brach, founder, Offscreen.
Veronica Ditting, art director, The Gentlewoman.
Rob Orchard, founder, Delayed Gratification.
Elana Schlenker, founder, Gratuitous Type.
Peter Houston, blogger and man behind the Magazine Diaries.
Simon Lyle, editor of Hot Rum Cow and new magazine Poppy.
Danny Miller, founder of Little White Lies, revealing his new magazine.
Pekka Toivenen, ‘art dictator’, FAT.
Watch out for further additions, and meanwhile book your tickets here.
What they said about last year’s conference:
A great addition to the conference-calendar, let’s hope it becomes an annual event…’ – Form Fifty Five
‘If the conference was organised like a magazine, its pace and structure was well maintained by its ‘editor’ magCulture’s Jeremy Leslie. A natural extension of his book of the same name, the conference platform enabled many of those featured in his round-up of this “golden age” of magazines to explain why they do what they do. And, more pertinently, how. While newspapers struggle and the climate for print publishing remains rocked by digital, it’s now clear that many magazines, large and small, are continuing to thrive.’ – Mark Sinclair, Creative Review, December 2013
‘The event delivered a fascinating series of insights into how some of the world’s most creatively-driven and pioneering magazine-makers are taking their craft to the next level’ – review of The Modern Magazine conference, Nick Carson, Computer Arts, December 2013
‘The recurring use of the terms "storytelling", "conversation" and "passion project" throughout the conference underlined the continued longevity and permanence of the print medium.’ – Disegno
