‘Not new, but original’

Reveling in the decay of fashion as we knew’, the excellently named Mildew is a relatively new (or original) title celebrating secondhand fashion and creative reuse, created by the deputy editor of magCulture favourites Broccoli and Mushroom People, Ellen Freeman.

The first issue was a joyful collection of hand-me-downs, vintage finds, repaired pieces and the stories behind them, and this sophomore edition expands on that by considering secondhand culture at large; you'll find stories on Cairo's ’Date Market’, textile maps connecting Venezuelan migrants, the virtues of mending throughout history and some excellent material from the archives of 70s cult fashion mag, Rags.

Plenty to get you thinking about ’old clothes in new ways’.

On the Journal
At work with Ellen Freeman: ‘Fashion right now is all about individual personality; every kind of denim is in style, every kind of hairstyle is in style—people want to express something original, so it feels like being “on trend” now is less about going to the mall and buying the collection that just came out, and more about wearing one-of-a-kind pieces scavenged from thrift stores and flea markets that are unique to you.
