Published by The Modernist Society, the small-format and currently square-shaped The Modernist (its shape changes regularly) explores 20th century architecture and design via quarterly, themed-issues. This is the magazine's landmark 50th issue, themed North, and they've gone all glossy and golden to mark the occasion.
As the team explain, ‘it's best not to get too hung-up on the geographical perceptions of what is or isn't northern, and instead settle on the maxim that ‘the north’ is a feeling.’ With that in mind, there's plenty on Scotland—a post-war housing complex in Aberdeen, the under-appreciated murals of Charles Anderson and miniature models of North Sea oil rigs—as well as northern hemispheres elsewhere in Utqiavik, Delhi, Beijing and Scandinavia. Plus, a piece on The Modernist's Mancunian roots, by way of Coronation Street.
