Arriving to our shelves hot off the press, the first edition of London-based literary title New Papers is remarkable in both its form and content, featuring a trifold wraparound that functions as both graphic masthead (front panel) and editor's note (back panel).
Combining fiction and poetry, issue one contains four stories and two poems. The editor's note, which places an almost clinical emphasis on form, painstakingly recording the number of characters, words and stanzas in each piece, bristles against the emotive language within. This tension is perhaps best encapsulated by a line in the second piece, Gabrielle Sicam's ‘He Oils the Cogs,’: ‘I was trying to explain that the shape of it had changed.’ This, plus plenty more, inside.
