The Pride Flag Above the Prison

145 x 205mm, 44 pages
London, UK
Created by: Kitya Mark

As its title suggests, this Risograph printed essay investigates the implications and empty gesture of flying the Pride flag above prisons, a sight witnessed by author Kitya Mark at HMP Oakwood Prison while campaigning for the rights of incarcerated people.

Blending critical writing with poetry and memoir, the text offers an anti-carceral‘ manifesto by analysing the contradiction in relation to capitalism, reputation-washing and supposed reforms. As Kitya writes: ‘If the pride flag is hoisted on a pole to flutter gently in the breeze, but no one can see it, has it been flown at all?‘
