Empire
Every Monday in the lead up to this year’s Modern Magazine conference we’re inviting a different speaker from the line-up to introduce a spread from the most recent issue of their magazine.
Today the editor-in-chief of Empire, Terri White, is taking us through the latest issue of the film and entertainment monthly. Terri joined the magazine a year ago after stints at Time Out New York and Shortlist. At ModMag, she’ll be talking about what a big magazine like Empire needs to do today to keep itself relevant.
‘From blockbusters to art house movies, indies to the latest Netflix hit, Empire is committed to getting access to the biggest filmmakers and actors and telling the real stories behind what you’re seeing on screen. Launched twenty-seven years ago, Empire has grown and evolved to be a magazine, website, podcast, interactive digital edition and live events.
‘The latest issue is full of diversity and breadth – reflecting recent changes to Empire’s content – with features on Netflix’s Luke Cage, the new Oasis documentary Supersonic, an interview with Anna Kendrick, the new Tom Cruise outing Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, a French Connection reunion in New York, tribute to Gene Wilder and the crazy story of the first all-drag queen sci-fi fantasy film, Vegas in Space, to tie in with the film’s twenty-fifth anniversary. The Marvel Cinematic Universe gets even bigger this month as the long-awaited release of Doctor Strange sees Benedict Cumberbatch take on the role of the psychotropic superhero. That's our cover story.
Terri chose to highlight the Vegas In Space story from the current issue.
‘Vegas in Space is a largely unknown film to mainstream audiences, but one that played an important role in the emergence of Queer Cinema. From a visual perspective, it really illustrates the strides creative director Chris Lupton is taking at Empire to ensure the magazine looks bold, exciting and modern (even when dealing with old movies!). He commissioned one of our regular illustrators Bill McConkey to create planets and spaceships you see in the film, teaming them with bright, bold colours and unseen images from the archives of the original unit photographer.’
We’re looking forward to hearing more from Terri at ModMag16 on 27 October.
