‘What makes food queer?’ asks vibrant new food zine Play, bringing together a diverse community of LGBTQ+ chefs, writers and artists to explore the the relationship between eating, desire and queer identities. Super visuals aside, it’s filled with variously formatted recipes, colourful gradients and collaged stock food imagery, and published as part of a wider queer mutual aid initiative fighting food insecurity in the US.

This first issue shows you how to make an Emma D’Arcy-inspired vinaigrette, beet creamsicles, popcorn for your weekly Dungeons and Dragons sesh, the particularly enticing ‘fake French chicken for toxic lonely bachelors’, and more. Plus, a photo feature on food masks and an essay spotlighting mutual aid initiatives for trans communities across the country. Throw in that cheeky, peachy type on the cover and you have a lovely addition to a (generally) straight food landscape.
