OPEN Tennis #1

215 x 275 mm, 114 pages (with foldout poster)
New York, US
Since 2024
Editorial director: David Shaftel
Creative director: David Bartholow
Art director: Larry Buchanan

Emerging from Racquet's recent headline-making leadership split, OPEN Tennis is a new title helmed by former Racquet co-founder David Shaftel, which pointedly aims to ‘stop fetishizing the past, and get on with creating a new storyline’ for both a historically insular sport and—if reading between the (base)lines—tennis media at large.

Physically, its certainly a departure from other tennis titles on our shelves with its large format and practical staple binding, with a mix of sports, fashion and lifestyle-oriented features within. It's the up-and-coming Anna Kalinskaya fronting this debut issue, which also covers Ralph Lauren's Wimbledon takeover; a hedonistic photographic excursion to Hydra; Indian doubles stalwart Rohan Bopanna; a critique of tennis fashion; and a lovely foldout poster illustrating last year's Japan Open.
