Te #3

185 x 260, 182 pages
Beijing, China and New York, US (English and Chinese-language)
Annual
Published since 2021
Editors: Michael Guo and Kechun Qin
Designer and art director: Can Yang

Tactile and beautifully compiled, Te explores contemporary art and cultural anthropology, its name derived from the Hokkien pronunciation of ‘tea’ (dæ) and difference in spelling highlighting the globalising forces of human history. Each issue elegantly synthesises Chinese and European design elements, making for a busy, layered set of niche essays, interviews and visuals.

Always uniquely themed—the first two issues were ‘The Lost Society’ and ‘Song of the Nightingale’—this third edition revolves around ‘Mirroring’ and features nine stories investigating modes of healing and self-exploration, be it through Algeria's colonial legacy, the experiences of migrant workers in the Philippines, the aftermath of a tsunami in Kitagama, fictional accounts of research trips across Northeast Asia and a series of artist correspondences on the relationship between astrology, fate and choice.
