‘A most humble and universal tool’

Gentle on the eyes and in the hands, Pencil is a new title produced entirely in, well, pencil! Everything from the cover art to images, texts and even page numbers inside were originally handwritten or drawn using graphite, reproduced on pages that feel appropriately notebook-esque. It's an ode to reconnecting with analog tools away from digital distractions because, as editor Sasha Wizansky writes, ‘entire worlds can emerge from a single pencil.’

Following a strong debut (or zeroth) issue, this sophomore edition explores the inextricable relationship between pencils and attention—‘is it something that is paid, held, sought or drawn?’

Find a set of nineteen diverse responses inside: Peter Schmidt's hyper-philosophical musings; surveillance camera selfie-sketches from Alice Ro; Suzanne Wise's mind-bending trip the psychiatrist; weeklong observational drawings from Dominika Wróblewska; Ben Pond's words pushing graphite nibs to the limit; and plenty more.
