Spiral-bound Synonym offers a highly visual, passionate look at cross-cultural flavours and immigrant food stories, aiming to shed light on ‘how trade, politics, colonialism, and capitalism have changed food cultures around the world.’

Featuring a mix of recipes, interviews and plenty of vivid, photogenic food, this second issue is themed ‘Rice & Beans’, a celebration of home comforts, as well as the universality and versatility of these staple ingredients, which have been reimagined ‘in almost every culture.’ The pieces feel personal and accessible, ranging from recipes for warming weeknight dinners, tasty snacks and dinner party favourites to an essay on the crop farmer PJ Haynie, the great-great-grandson of one of the first Black people in the U.S. to own a rice mill.

For editor-in-chief Caroline Hwang, Synonym is a vehicle through which to ‘improve our understanding of those around us’ in the hope that ‘in the end we’ll all see one another’s humanity.’
