Out now: Another Escape

At recent Printout evenings it’s been interesting to note the number of magazines appearing from Bristol recently: Cereal and Offlife are two examples. Another Escape is another, an occasional zine that has just morphed into biannual magazine. The result is a smart, focused new magazine about following your inspiration to do what you want to do. Something we can all relate to.

At 114 pages and perfect bound, this launch issue easily achieves its aim to ‘slot onto your bookcase, sit on the coffee table or be slung into a rucksack.’ It is hefty enough to feel useful and collectible, light enough to be taken on the bus.

As editor Rachel Maria Taylor and creative director Jody Daunton point out in their intro to the issue, a concentration on what inspires people has inadvertantly led to a focus on sustainability, with pieces about Permaculture (above) and dealing with food waste (below).

All of which sounds very worthy, but despite that undercurrent Another Escape is anything but preachy. It celebrates people and their desire to explore both internal and external worlds. The magazine is split into four sections – Inspiration, Exploration, Process and Response – indicated by the color-coded logos on the page edges (below).

Also in the issue: Nick Ballon’s photographs of Butch Cassidy’s Bolivia; a visit to Wales’s Tipi Valley; an investigation of originality and contributions from other Bristol-based magazines including cycling mag Boneshaker and photography mag ETWM.

This first magazine-format edition is a good start, the issue feels intelligently compiled and edited, the design clean and unobtrusive. My one quibble is that it feels quite single-paced and could perhaps do with an occasional louder/faster voice.
