‘Reclaiming North Africa’s Visual Culture’
Atlas Aesthetics. is a new large-format arts and culture title dedicated to showcasing a multifaceted overview of North Africa’s visual culture in defiance of the reductive tropes typically propagated by the West. According to editor Assia Sabi, the intention isn’t ‘to replace one story with another, but to create space for many’. Expect empowering photo editorials, poems, artist interviews and deconstructions of discursive cinema.
This debut issue for Autumn/Winter 2025, titled ‘Reclamation’, considers the plethora of dialects, styles, rituals and customs that inform North Africa’s complex visual identity. The inaugural issue revolves around two key fashion editorials: ‘At the Hajema’, photographed by Ghalia Kriaa, offers a compelling exploration of femininity, freedom, and friendship set within one of Tunisia’s ubiquitous hair salons; while ‘El Mehdi’, shot by Sophia El Bahja, captures the Rabat-born musician as he stakes claim to an identity all his own.
