Aesthetica #130

210 x 296 mm, 148 pages
York, UK
Bimonthly
Editor: Cherie Federico
Creative producer: Eleanor Sutherland

Produced in the north of England, Aesthetica offers a much-welcomed, non London-centric view of art, design, photography and general culture.

Issue #130 positions art as a respite from the pervasive sense of uncertainty and growing conflict unfolding on a global scale. As editor Chloe Federico writes in her editorial: ‘Art reminds us that even in upheaval we can pause, reflect and imagine alternatives.’

This edition’s cover story showcases the work of Tina Simakova, a London-based portrait photographer working with natural light to create minimal yet evocative compositions. Elsewhere, readers can find an interview with founder of Danish architecture firm ‘BIG’, delving into their new book documenting two decades of innovative design, as well as an annotated showcase of work from the iconic artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen. Other photographers featured in this issue include Linda Westin, Harold Ross, Senay Berhe, Chrissy Lush, and Jane Fulton Alt.

On the Journal:
‘We look for ‘art’ in the broadest sense, featuring works that are both visually engaging and conceptually or culturally important. There are layers to the images and pieces that we publish, all with ties to a rapidly changing world, from the climate crisis to conversations around social justice’ – Kate Simpson, Associate editor.
