Sanayi313 Paper is the annual contemporary art magazine from the eponymous Istanbul-based design studio. An extension of their practice, the magazine seeks to cultivate another layer of engagement with its creative and culturally versed community.
Smothered in lacquered lipstick kisses, a demonstration of gratitude and an ode to featured artist Nezaket Ekici’s intimate debut performance ‘Emotion in Motion’, issue six celebrates a decade of Sanyi313. In many ways it’s as much a love letter to Istanbul and its inhabitants—their craftsmanship ‘woven into everyday life’—as it is to the studio’s place within it. Inside, photographer Dilan Bozyel presents empowering black and white portraits of seven women spanning the seven regions of Anatolia; the transcribed quotes accompanying the photographs paint a diverse picture of their lives and creative practices. Following this, contributors leave the familiar comforts of Turkey to document their encounters with the cultures of the Midwest, Cambodia and Rio. Elsewhere, fashion designer Erdem Moralioglu journeys inwards, drawing inspiration from his dual British and Turkish heritage. Other highlights include a feature by editor Deniz Bultsuz, exploring the 90s thriving cultural scene as a microcosm of a world in transition, as well as an illuminating conversation with former fashion editor Fatos Yalin, who reminisces on her role in the expansion of the Turkish publishing industry in the 1980s.
