Published every 15 days during the French university year, September to June, Revue Faire is a vital addition to the small selection of journals addressing graphic design from a critical standpoint. Every issue addresses a single area of creative endeavour, and is presented in the magazine’s signature graphic style in two languages.
This issue turns to the world of 3D design–see that 3D-rendered logo on the front cover—tracing its development from the early experiments of the seventies to today’s high-resolution avatars. Three distinct sections—Nature and Landscapes, Objects, and Humanoids—each open with lengthy visual essays by 3D artist Harriet Davey showing the development of each mode of 3D design.
From the earliest video game renders to the latest life-like human hands, the issue showcases how 3D design has rapidly, and impressively, developed, while providing a critical contextualisation that rises above the standard ‘wow’ response to the form.
On the Journal
At Work With founders Sacha and François: ‘We started Revue Faire as we finished being weekly lecturers in graphic design schools. But the publishing rhythm is based on the school schedule—an issue every 15 days, from September to June. The main purpose is to deliver every 15 days a kind of small course about one specific topic. In that way, one season can become a kind of visual culture course in 15 lessons.’
