‘For the outsiders, by the outsiders’
Re-animating the corpse of 70s horror zines, new launch Phantasmag is ‘a cabinet of curiosities exploring horror in its many forms.’ Though it features stories from all corners of society, at its heart, this is a publication that centres queer and female perspectives.
The fourth issue opens with a look back at 50 years of Dario Argento’s ‘Deep Red’, reflecting on the film’s lingering beauty in the space between sensuality and blunt-force impact. Elsewhere, ‘Frankenstein’s’ costume designer Kate Hawley discusses the art of compromising historical accuracy to build a visual world worthy of Del Toro’s imagination; queer author Lucy Rose discusses twisting sapphic cannabillism, mother-daughter relationships and the stark Cumbrian landscapes in her new book ‘The Lamb’; and the 21-year-old writer-director, Alice Maio Mackey, is spotlighted for redefining trans horror through queer-focused, blood-soaked, short films. Plus, cover star Juliette Gariépy speaks about leading Pascal Plante’s ‘Red Rooms’—and why she’s exhausted by horror films about boyfriends killing their girlfriends.
